About SAUNET
The Sustainable Africa University Network (SAUNET) is a network promoting collaborative research for Africa’s sustainability. SAUNET’s mission is to strengthen regional and local capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa through building multi-and transdisciplinary partnerships with Swedish institutions. The network is affiliated to the Baltic University Programme (BUP) at the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD), Uppsala University, and is coordinated by research associate Genene Mulugeta, who is also chairperson of the ICSU-ROA Science Program on hazards and disasters.

Vision
The vision of SAUNET is reducing poverty through building a sustainable Africa.

Mission
SAUNETs mission is to strengthen sustainability/vulnerability research in SSA for the benefit of African society. These concern:

  • Addressing the challenges of Global Environmental Change and sustainable development (SSA) through providing science based knowledge.
  • Promoting the participation of African scientists in the international scientific arena.
  • Sharing knowledge and experiences, and facilitating dialogue between African and swedish/global scientists.
  • Facilitating links to other institutions websites that address  sustainability/vulnerability issues; news, reports, publications, case studies and research results, focussing on SSA.

Activities
SAUNET in partnership with a number of African universities and research institutions is currently developing long-term research projects on “Reducing risks of Natural and Human-induced hazards and disasters in sub-Saharan Africa”. A research consortium and working groups have been established towards meeting this goal. The aim is to strengthen regional and local capacity on Global Environmental Change through conducting research, developing educational materials, and training courses, in collaboration with universities in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA). The immediate objective is to implement the four ICSU-ROA science plans, namely: 1) Sustainable Energy, 2) Hazards and Disasters (Fig.1), 3) Health and Human wellbeing, and 4) Global environmental Change.

SAUNET in partnership with ICSU-ROA aims to participate in various international research initiatives that aim to develop the knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability in the coming decades.
